Dr. Mao`s research interests are the design, physical modeling, fabrication and characterization of nanomaterials and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) with a specific emphasis on biomedical and lab-on-a-chip applications.
One of Mao`s research interests are enabling portable pathogen detection systems using disposable cartridges. These systems would offer MEMS-scale fluidic transport, separation and mixing, a matrix of binding sites for different pathogens, and means of detection.
Other microfluidics applications being pursued include the modeling and testing of colloidal suspensions of nanoparticles such as ferrofluids. Ferrofluids can be pumped inside a closed-loop microfluidic system, providing alternatives for micro-cooling and micro-power generation applications.
