Membership in the Faculty

Procedure for Evaluation of Membership Application

1) The Faculty of Engineering has a three-person Membership Committee. The committee is responsible for evaluating all applications and making recommendations to the Director.

2) The basis of evaluation will be meeting the requirements for membership which include preparedness to conduct engineering faculty work and commitment of time to the Faculty of Engineering.

a. The principal evidence of preparedness should confirm scholarly commitment and competency to conduct and/or participate in engineering programs.

Additional evidence should include one or more of the following:

Prior or current engagement in an engineering program.

Preparedness to provide scholarly participation in engineering curricular activities at the undergraduate or graduate level.

A degree(s) in engineering or a closely related discipline.

Evidence of collaborative engagement in, scholarly commitment to and/or competency in engineering programs.

Publications of engineering studies in a scholarly journal.

Licensed to practice engineering (i.e., be a PE).

Active membership in a professional engineering society.

b. Evidence of time commitment should include one or more of the following:

Applicant's letter committing to an example list of engineering activities.

Letter from the applicant's supervisor stating allocation of time.

Budgeted time in an engineering project funded through the Faculty of Engineering.

Individual in the private sector committing time to work with undergraduate or graduate students.

Individual in the private sector providing time to collaborate in special engineering projects.

3) The Membership Committee is charged to take into consideration special qualifications and circumstances that provide a strong rationale to deviate from the requirements outlined above. Overall, the committee should base its recommendation on the person's preparedness to do high quality engineering work, willingness to contribute to engineering curricular activities and commitment of time to the Faculty of Engineering.

4) The Committee's recommendation will be submitted to the Director who will seek the concurrence of the Engineering Council before accepting the recommendation.
