Membership in the Faculty of Engineering

Overview
The Faculty of Engineering is a body of individuals working to advance comprehensive engineering at the University of Georgia. Based on the principles of entrepreneurship, boundarylessness and networking, the Faculty of Engineering is a learning organizaiton comprised of dynamic and evolving engineering academic, research and outreach programs.

Members of the Faculty of Engineering are located in academic units throughout campus, engaging in engineering activies as they intersect with their own field of study. Members benefit from having enhanced opportunities to seek extramural funds, recruit graduate students, develop industry collaborations, and access resources of the Faculty of Engineering.

Faculty of Engineering programs are created at the confluence of the sciences, arts and engineering - adding new dimensions to individual academic units at UGA as well as to the larger University community.

Overall Criteria
The central role of a university faculty is to perform curricular activities, and the primary work of engineers is inspired by the desire to meet needs by developing new and advanced systems and technologies. Overall, a member of the Faculty of Engineering will meet both criteria. That is, members will engage in some activity related to pedagogy and education of engineering students, and overall, their work will be use-inspired leading to development of advanced systems. Faculty members from any discipline appointed on any faculty track and engineers in the private sector (i.e., industry, agency and non-governmental organization) who devote faculty time to the University of Georgia are eligible to become members of the Faculty of Engineering.

Membership Term
Membership in the Faculty of Engineering is for a maximum period of five-year. A member may renew membership after each term by submitting a formal application. Applications will be considered twice an academic year - once each in the Fall and Spring semesters.

Member Categories
The Faculty of Engineering has two membership categories:
1. Engineering Member
2. Affiliate Member

Engineering Member
A faculty member (not limited to UGA faculty) in any faculty track who allocates1 significant time2 to a UGA engineering program and who commits3 a part of the allocated time to actively participate in UGA engineering curricular activities4,

or

An individual in the private sector (e.g., industry, agency, NGO) with a degree in engineering or a closely related discipline who designates5 significant time to a UGA engineering program and who commits a part of the designated time to actively participate in UGA engineering curricular activities.

Affiliate Member
A faculty member (not limited to UGA faculty) in any faculty track who allocates considerable time6 to a UGA engineering program and who provides7 a part of the allocated time to collaborate in UGA engineering curricular activities,

or

An individual in the private sector (e.g., industry, agency, NGO) with a degree in engineering or a closely related discipline who designates considerable time to a UGA engineering program and who provides a part of the designated time to collaborate in UGA engineering curricular activities.

Application Procedure
Applications will be received only via the Faculty of Engineering Website.

1) Complete the application form available on the Website.

2) Attach a current curriculum vitae which includes publications and grants for the last seven years.

3) Attach a list of current project(s) and the funding source(s).

4) Attach a Statement of Objective (one-page limit) that addresses the following:

What is the primary reason you are interested in being a member.

In which engineering curricular activities you will participate. Be creative in proposing activities that contributes to engineering education.

In what area of engineering will your work focus.

As a result of being a member, in what dimension will your program grow and add to the University of Georgia's engineering participation.

5) Renewal membership applications should provide evidence of accomplishments during the preceding membership term.

Procedure for Evaluation of Membership Application
1) The Faculty of Engineering has a three-person Membership Committee. The committee is responsible for evaluating all applications and making recommendations to the Director.

2) The basis of evaluation will be meeting the requirements for membership which include preparedness to conduct engineering faculty work and commitment of time to the Faculty of Engineering.

a. The principal evidence of preparedness should confirm scholarly commitment and competency to conduct and/or participate in engineering programs.

Additional evidence should include one or more of the following:

Prior or current engagement in an engineering program.

Preparedness to provide scholarly participation in engineering curricular activities at the undergraduate or graduate level.

A degree(s) in engineering or a closely related discipline.

Evidence of collaborative engagement in, scholarly commitment to and/or competency in engineering programs.

Publications of engineering studies in a scholarly refereed journal.

Licensed to practice engineering (i.e., be a PE).

Active membership in a professional engineering society.

b. Evidence of time commitment should include one or more of the following:

Applicant's letter committing to an example list of engineering activities.

Letter from the applicant's supervisor stating allocation of time.

Budgeted time in an engineering project funded through the Faculty of Engineering.

Individual in the private sector committing time to work with undergraduate or graduate students.

Individual in the private sector providing time to collaborate in special engineering projects.

3) The Membership Committee is charged to take into consideration special qualifications and circumstances that provide a strong rationale to deviate from the requirements outlined above. Overall, the committee should base its recommendation on the person's preparedness to do high quality engineering work, willingness to contribute to engineering curricular activities and commitment of time to the Faculty of Engineering.

4) The Committee's recommendation will be submitted to the Director who will seek the concurrence of the Engineering Council before accepting the recommendation.
_________________________________

1 Allocate Time - Means to arrive at some arrangement with the Faculty of Engineering for allocating time to perform an activity.

2 Significant Time - It is anticipated that many UGA faculty have existing activities that will benefit from and add value to comprehensive engineering programs. Other faculty may have the desire and time to commit to developing new program activities that will add value to interdisciplinary engineering programs and advance the goals of the Faculty of Engineering. Faculty whose interests fit either or both of the above scenarios are encouraged to apply for membership. It is desirable that an Engineering Member's engagement in the Faculty of Engineering be on the order of one week per month.

3 Commit Time - Means to commit time to perform an activity related to engineering education, like teaching a class.

4 Curricular Activities - Means activities related to pedagogy and the education of engineering students in an engineering or closely related subject; e.g., classroom and laboratory instruction, mentoring engineering students design projects, serving as member of engineering graduate student advisory committees. (University professors who are Engineering Members should serve as major professor of graduate students). Applicants are encouraged to be creative in suggesting/describing their proposed involvement in engineering curricular activities.

5 Designate Time - Means designation of time without a formal allocation, as in an industry member designating time.

6 Considerable Time - It is anticipated that many UGA faculty have existing activities that will benefit from and add value to comprehensive engineering programs. Other faculty may have the desire and time to commit to developing new program activities that will add value to interdisciplinary engineering programs and advance the goals of the Faculty of Engineering. Faculty whose interests fit either or both of the above scenarios are encouraged to apply for membership. It is desirable that an Affiliate Member's engagement in the Faculty of Engineering be on the order of two days per month.

7 Provide Time - Means to provide time by accepting a request for an activity; as an industry member providing time to serve on a committee.
