University of Georgia engineering students will highlight their research and design projects during the College of Engineering’s Senior Design Showcase on Monday, May 2 in the Grand Hall of the Tate Student Center. The event is open to the public from 1:30 – 3 p.m.
More than 30 teams will display prototypes and discuss the mechanics, design, and engineering behind a wide range of projects they have spent months designing and refining. The projects include a low-cost device to detect pneumonia and a moon buggy entered in the NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge. Other engineering teams have collaborated with communities across Georgia to improve roadways, bridges and other infrastructure.
“Our senior capstone design course provides students with experience in solving complex engineering problems,” said Donald J. Leo, dean of the UGA College of Engineering. “Applying what they have learned in their undergraduate program to real-world engineering design challenges is a culmination of their studies at UGA and excellent preparation for the next step in their careers.”
Senior design courses provide UGA engineering students an opportunity to work with partners from industry, government and non-profit groups on real-world projects. The experience is designed to help students develop essential skills for the workforce including team building, creative problem solving and collaboration while participating in projects from planning to completion.
The 2016 Senior Design Showcase is sponsored by AT&T, General Electric, Georgia Power, the Jackson County Water & Sewerage Authority, Lockheed Martin, Terrapin Beer Company and Whiting-Turner.
