UGA study suggests overfishing may be worse than presently believed

Fish in the oceanA team of scientists at the University of Georgia is offering a new approach to exploring and predicting the structure of ocean ecosystems.

“This finding is important because it could dramatically shift conservation baselines and suggests overfishing may be much worse than we presently believe,” said Brock Woodson, an assistant professor in the UGA College of Engineering and the project’s lead investigator.

John Schramski, an associate professor in the College of Engineering, and Samantha Joye, an associate professor in the department of marine sciences, collaborated on the research. The team presents its finding in a paper published this week in the journal “Nature Communications.”
