Research

The Faculty of Engineering is a new kind of engineering unit organized to capture the convergence of the sciences, humanities and engineering. Out of the confluence of disciplines grows a use-inspired research paradigm focused on the development of products and services that are relevant to the needs of society.

The Office of the Vice President for Research and the University of Georgia Research Foundation announced the recipients of the Engineering Grants Program for 2004. Six interdisciplinary proposals were selected for funding; congratulations to the teams, listed below with the title of their proposal, for recognition of their interdisciplinary, engineering-related research.

Yiping Zhao and Yao-Wen Huang "A Nanorod-Based Sensor for Bio-Signal Amplification and Rapid Detection of Pathogens" $35,000

Glen Rains and W. Joe Lewis "Development of a Field Portable Volatile Chemical Sensor Using A Trained Parasitoid Wasp, Microplitis croceipes" $25,000

Andrew Sornborger, Charles Keith and James Lauderdale "Intrinsic Fluorimetric Imaging of Neural Activation in Cultured Cells and Zebrafish" $40,000

Joy Doran Peterson and Mark Eiteman "Using Georgia's Warm Season Grasses as Substrates for Bio-based Industrial Products" $30,000

The following are projects from the 2003 Engineering Grants Program that were selected for a second year of funding:

John Stickney and Uwe Happek "Electrodeposition of Monolithic Optoelectronic Devices" $40,000

William Kisaalita and Yiping Zhao "Developing Microstructures for Three-Dimensional Cell Growth" $30,000
